The difference between a $0 chip repair and a $700 windshield replacement is often 48 hours. Here's how to buy yourself time.
1. Cover the chip immediately
Clear packing tape over the chip keeps dirt and moisture out. Dirt inside the crack is the enemy — it prevents our resin from bonding cleanly during repair.
2. Skip the car wash
High-pressure water and drastic temperature swings will run the crack outward faster than anything else. No touchless washes either until the chip is repaired.
3. Avoid AC blasts on cold glass
Cold Durham morning + AC cranked on defrost = the exact recipe for a chip to run into a full crack. Warm the cabin gradually instead.
4. Don't slam doors
Slamming the door pressurizes the cabin and flexes the glass. Close doors gently until the repair is done.
5. Book the repair within the week
Most chips are repairable while they're small. Once a chip has spread past a quarter's diameter — or reached the edge — it's replacement territory. Most insurance policies waive the deductible for repair, so waiting literally costs money.
